Imam Muhsin Hendricks, Rest in Power!

My dad sent me a message this morning with a BBC article. It’s about Imam Muhsin Hendricks, who was tragically killed in a hate crime shooting on Saturday, on his way to celebrate an interfaith wedding.

I read the article in one breath, feeling weirdly full of grief for someone I had just learnt about - only to find out that he’s now no more.

Imam Muhsin Hendricks was an openly gay imam and the founder of The Inner Circle, an association for LGBTQ+ and other marginalised Muslims. He created a safe space for people to bring their whole selves into their religion. He was also married to a Hindu man and celebrated marriages between Muslims and non-Muslims.

He stood for love, freedom in love, understanding, and unity, which is what I always believed religion was about. Isn't it funny how the word Islam literally means peace, and to be in concord with one another?

My heart is full of sadness as another just voice is silenced, while hate, discrimination, and violence grow louder by the minute all around us.

Imam Muhsin Hendricks, rest in power!
